ADHD - Myths, Mysteries, and What We Know

ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is one of the most common mental health disorders. According to the CDC, approximately 6.1 million children in the US have an ADHD diagnosis. ADHD is one of the most misunderstood medical conditions. To clear up those misunderstandings, today we’re debunking myths, exploring mysteries, and revealing what we really know about ADHD.

Myths

All people with ADHD are hyperactive

ADHD is characterized by difficulty maintaining focus and impulsivity. Sometimes this results in hyperactivity, especially in young kids. In older kids, teens, and adults often the symptoms are more attention based.

Only kids have ADHD

ADHD is diagnosed in both children and adults. Children who are diagnosed will continue to have ADHD as adults, although they may have different symptoms or an easier time managing symptoms.

People with ADHD can never focus on anything

Most folks with ADHD are able to focus more easily on activities they enjoy or learn about topics they are interested in. For some, this might even mean hyperfocusing on something or being unable to stop thinking about or working on a project.

Mysteries

The cause of ADHD

We don’t know what causes ADHD in humans, scientists think it could be linked to something genetic or environmental (such as lead exposure).

What we Know

Accommodations in the classroom help students with ADHD

There are a number of great ways to manage ADHD in the classroom. Explaining assignments clearly and breaking them down into manageable tasks help maintain focus. Setting routines with built-in breaks and schedule tools keep students working to a set goal. Students with ADHD also tend to work harder on projects related to topics that they are more interested in.

Therapy and/or medication helps manage symptoms

Outside of the classroom, many kids and adults benefit from therapy or coaching sessions. Medication for older children, teens, and adults can also be helpful at maintaining focus and reducing impulsive behavior.

ADHD symptoms can change over time

Often with therapy and other strategies, folks diagnosed with ADHD will have an easier time focusing on tasks. High energy levels and impulsive behavior also tend to decrease in teens and adults.
